Hydrology-Water, water, everywhere!

1. Hydrosphere-all the water on the Earth

2. atmosphere-the ocean of gases that surrounds the Earth

3. 75 percent or 3/4 of the Earth's surface is covered in water.

4. saltwater- 97% of the Earth's water is saltwater.

5. freshwater- 3% of the Earth's water is fresh

6. 2/3rds of the freshwater is frozen in glaciers and icecaps

7. 1/3rd of the freshwater or 1% of all the water on Earth is useable by humans!

8. salinity-saltiness of the water. ocean water has 3.5% salinity.

9. 5 main sources of freshwater- glaciers and ice caps, groundwater, lakes, atmosphere, and rivers. These contain 3% of the hydrosphere.

10. 1% useable by humans-groundwater, lakes, rivers, and atmosphere.

11. groundwater-most of the freshwater that we use is found underground.

12. groundwater is found in aquifer

13. aquifer is an underground layer of permeable rock that contains water

14. permeable rock has spaces in it that can contain water

15. runoff is water from rain or melted snow that can help refill the aquifers

16. infiltration is the process of runoff soaking down into the aquifers

17. water table is the top of the water level in an aquifer

18. water wells- most drinking water comes from wells drilled down into the aquifer. Our drinking water comes from the aquifer!

19. reservoirs are large lakes that provide some drinking water for cities. Which lake in Georgia does Atlanta use?

20. desalination-process of removing salt from sea water to make it drinkable. IS EXPENSIVE!
